Criminology through Ireland

Criminology – Ireland

11 days Belfast, Dublin & Cork

Criminology

The Criminology Faculty-Led Program in Ireland offers students a unique opportunity to explore carceral history, modern penology, and transitional justice across a region shaped by complex political and social evolution, spanning Belfast, Dublin, and Cork.

Over 11 days and 10 nights, participants will engage with leading universities, historic criminal justice sites, and live court proceedings, gaining an international perspective on restorative policing, penal reform, and youth diversion systems. The program blends academic seminars, institutional visits, and cultural immersion for a deeply layered study abroad experience.

Through expert lectures and landmark site visits, students will trace the development of contemporary criminal justice in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Highlights include a seminar on transitional justice and community-led alternatives to paramilitary punishment at Queen’s University Belfast, a guest lecture on Irish sentencing policy and European recidivism metrics at University College Dublin’s Institute of Criminology, and a session on youth justice and diversion programs at University College Cork. Students will also observe a live criminal trial at the Criminal Courts of Justice in Dublin, bringing classroom theory into direct contact with practice.

Historic site visits further enrich the academic experience, with tours of Crumlin Road Gaol — Northern Ireland’s only remaining Victorian-era prison — Kilmainham Gaol, where leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising were executed, and Cork City Gaol, a 19th-century institution that witnessed Ireland’s War of Independence. A guided walk along Belfast’s Peace Walls and a visit to Blarney Castle round out the cultural journey.
