Italian History

History in Italy

19 days Venice, Ravenna, Florence, Siena, Assisi, Orvieto, Rome and Naples

History

Italian History in Italy offers students a unique opportunity to engage with academic and historical practitioners, explore Italian historical frameworks, and gain cross-cultural perspectives on the relationship between ancient civilisations and modern society.

Over 19 days, participants will visit leading cultural institutions, meet with history and archaeology experts, and explore historical, artistic, and archaeological traditions across Venice, Ravenna, Florence, Siena, Assisi, Orvieto, Rome, and Naples. The program combines academic learning, site visits, technical museum networking, and cultural exploration, providing students with a well-rounded understanding of the interdisciplinary humanities in an international context.

Through interactive site visits, expert guest lectures, and hands-on experiences, students will gain insight into Roman history, Etruscan civilisations, Renaissance art, and medieval religious traditions. Visits to organisations such as the Uffizi Gallery, the Vatican Museums, and the Archeological Parks of Pompeii and Herculaneum will provide a deeper understanding of historical preservation, ancient naval empires, and the engineering behind monumental classical structures. The program also includes opportunities for students to engage with research practitioners, discuss the intersection of history and archaeology, and explore how ancient societies shape modern national identity.

In addition to the academic and professional experiences, students will enjoy cultural immersion through guided tours, regional site visits, and local excursions, including walking tours of historic city centres, traditional regional group dinners, and day trips to explore the ancient port city of Ostia Antica and the historic Temple of Athena in Paestum.
