Begin in Madrid, where visits to iconic venues like Teatro Español and Teatro Real reveal the significance of theatre and opera in Spanish society. Engage in thought-provoking discussions on how history, including the Franco era, has influenced Spanish artistic expression. Witness performances by local artists and gain unique insights into the country’s evolving artistic landscape.

Travel to Seville, the birthplace of Flamenco and feel the rhythms and energy of Andalusian culture. Experience the music and dance that define the region through guided tours, workshops and cultural engagements in the renowned Triana neighborhood. Continue to Granada, where the enchanting Alhambra and the historic Albayzín district connect you to Spain’s Moorish past and its profound influence on Flamenco traditions.

Itinerary

  • Day 1

    Depart USA for Madrid, Spain

  • Day 2

    Morning

    Arrive in Madrid. Walking tour of the city centre, taking in the fascinating history of Madrid from the Moors to the Habsburg Empire up to the modern day.

    Afternoon

    Free time get lunch. Check into accommodation and relax.

    Evening

    Orientation session and overview of the itinerary.

    Group dinner.

  • Day 3

    Morning

    Guided visit of Teatro Español, discussing the significance of theatre in Spanish culture.

    Free time for lunch.

    Afternoon

    Attend a show by the Madrid Players, an amateur English‑language theatre group, founded in 1965.

    Subject to availability and may be interchanged for a similar experience.

    Evening

    Free for dinner and to explore Madrid.

  • Day 4

    Morning

    Lecture: “The Impact of the Franco Dictatorship on Spanish Theatre and Regional Traditions.”

    Afternoon

    Guided visit of Teatro Real, the top opera house in Spain. It is also one of the most renowned centers of performing arts in Europe. The origins of this opera house date back to 1738.

    Evening

    Free for dinner. Prepare for transfer day tomorrow.

  • Day 5

    Morning

    Train to Seville (approx. 2.5 hours). Guided walking tour of the city centre, taking in sites such as the cathedral, Alcázar and Santa Cruz neighbourhoods.

    Afternoon

    Check into accommodation. Free time for lunch and to unpack. Guided walking tour of the famous Triana neighborhood, renowned as the birthplace of Flamenco. The tour will focus on the musical and cultural heritage of the area.

    Evening

    Group dinner.

  • Day 6

    Morning

    Visit the Flamenco Dance Museum and a lecture on the regional styles of flamenco.

    Afternoon

    Participate in a dance workshop focusing on different flamenco styles from various regions.

    Evening

    Free for dinner. Suggested activity: attend a flamenco performance.

  • Day 7

    Morning

    Visit a local community center to learn about traditional Andalusian music and dance.

    Afternoon

    Time to visit the Cathedral and Real Alcázar, which are both registered as UN World Heritage Sites.

    Evening

    Dinner with group. Prepare for transfer to Granada tomorrow.

  • Day 8

    Morning

    Travel to Granada (approx. 3 hours by bus).

    Afternoon

    Check into accommodation and free time for lunch.

    Evening

    Attend a performance in the historic Albayzín district, focusing on the interplay of Arabic and Spanish musical traditions.

  • Day 9

    Morning

    Guided tour of the Alhambra, emphasizing its historical significance and influence on music and arts.

    Afternoon

    Workshop on the history of Moorish music and its influence on Flamenco.

    Evening

    Free evening to explore Granada’s music scene.

  • Day 10

    Morning

    Travel back to Madrid (approx. 3.5 hours by train).

    Afternoon

    Visit to a local music school, focusing on Spanish classical music and its evolution.

    Evening

    Farewell dinner and final reflections on the journey’s impact on understanding Spanish culture.

    Check out and depart for the airport.

What’s Included

  • Housing

    • Students & faculty will be housed in 3 star hotel accommodation with breakfast included
    • 2 students per bedroom (2 separate beds) with private bathroom
    • Private bedrooms for faculty members
  • Meals

    • Breakfast is included
    • 2 group meals included in the program as part of activities for students and faculty – Welcome Dinner and Farewell Dinner
  • Transport

    • For the most part students will walk around the locations they will visit
    • Students will be provided with a weekly public transport card included in program fee to use on buses and trains
    • Private or public transport will be arranged for airport transfers and scheduled day trips/half day trips, and this is included in the program fee
  • On-Site Support

    • TLAC team member on-site in Spain will be assigned to your group for the duration of the program
    • You will be provided with a 24-hour Emergency Contact phone number to reach TLAC at any time during your stay
  • Cultural Activities

    • Engaging learning through a rich variety of cultural activities that bring academic concepts to life. Students will have the opportunity to explore the cultural heritage of their destination, connecting it directly to their field of study through thoughtfully curated experiences.
