Natural Studies of Ecology and Biology in Ireland

Ecology & Biology – Ireland

13 days Dublin, Galway & Cork

Ecology & Biology

The Ecology and Biology Faculty-Led Program in Ireland offers students a unique opportunity to explore conservation biology, marine ecology, and glacial geology across an island defined by its extraordinary biogeography and rich biodiversity, spanning Dublin, Galway, and Cork.

Over 13 days and 12 nights, participants will engage with leading universities, protected natural landscapes, and marine research operations, gaining an international perspective on island ecosystems, coastal conservation, and Atlantic biodiversity. The program blends academic seminars, field excursions, and cultural immersion for a truly multi-dimensional study abroad experience.

Through expert lectures and hands-on ecological encounters, students will examine how Ireland’s unique environment shapes modern environmental science. Academic highlights include a lecture on Irish biogeography at Trinity College Dublin, a seminar on coastal protection methods at the University of Galway, and a session on marine mammal conservation at University College Cork. Field experiences bring these concepts to life: a hike through Wicklow Mountains National Park’s glaciated valleys and blanket bogs, a guided walk along the UNESCO-recognized Cliffs of Moher — a protected seabird breeding sanctuary — and a tour of Mungo Murphy’s Seaweed Co. aquaculture farm on Galway Bay. Students will also visit Fota Wildlife Park, a UCC research partner running international breeding programs for endangered species.

Beyond the academic and scientific experiences, students will enjoy rich cultural immersion through walking tours of Dublin, Galway, and Cork, a traditional Irish dancing class at Galway Céilí Club, free time to explore the Aran Islands, a visit to the historic port town of Cobh, and a trip to Blarney Castle.
