Studies of History and Science in Spain

History & Science – Spain

12 days Madrid, Valencia & Granada

History & Science

The History and Science Faculty-Led Program in Spain offers students a unique opportunity to explore natural history, scientific discovery, and cultural heritage across Madrid, Valencia, and Granada, a historic crossroads of scientific thought spanning centuries and civilizations.

Over 12 days and 11 nights, participants will engage with leading universities, historic research institutions, and world-class science museums, gaining an international perspective on the evolution of scientific inquiry from the Islamic Golden Age to modern sustainability research. The program blends academic lectures, institutional visits, and ecological and architectural exploration for a comprehensive study abroad experience.

Through expert lectures and immersive site visits, students will trace the development of scientific thought across eras and cultures. Academic highlights include a lecture on Spain’s historic contributions to European science at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, a seminar on historical surgical tools and medical manuscripts at the University of Valencia’s Institute for the History of Medicine and Science, and a lecture on the Islamic Golden Age at the University of Granada. Students will also visit the Royal Observatory of Madrid, the National Museum of Natural Sciences, the Príncipe Felipe Science Museum, and the Oceanogràfic in Valencia for a behind-the-scenes look at marine research and conservation.

Beyond the classroom, students will experience Spain’s rich ecological and architectural legacy through a visit to Albufera Natural Park — birthplace of paella — complete with a hands-on cooking class, a guided tour of the Alhambra Palace and Generalife gardens, and a visit to Granada’s interactive Parque de las Ciencias.
